It’s just about 11:00 p.m. as I log in to write a quick blog post. For a number of reasons, I have been rather sleep-deprived for the last 10 days or so, and my body is aching to turn in early for just one night – and yet I sit with my adoption binder open, checklists in front of me, sorting through papers, determining which need to be certified at the Missouri Secretary of State’s office tomorrow and then which need to be sent off to the Chicago consulate and which to the New York consulate. And though my body would like nothing more than to surrender to sleep as soon as possible, I sit at the table getting all of our documents set up for their next steps. These are the things mommies do – with great joy – for their babies. Every day and every step brings us closer 🙂

On a slightly different note, other things that mommies do – with perhaps slightly less joy – include acquiescing to their toddlers’ constant refrain of repeated song requests. I think the desire to listen to a single song on repeat for hours, days, even weeks on end may be somehow embedded in the genes I have passed on to Miranda, because I remember doing this same thing myself, and I remember my parents sometimes indulging me. But oh, how I wish my daughter would broaden her interest in music! I estimate that I have listened to “the by and by song” – otherwise known as “I’ll Fly Away” – track 4 on Jars of Clay’s “Redemption Songs” album – approximately 1 million times in the past 3 months or so (and that is even with the 3 week hiatus we had to take when we accidentally left the CD in my mom’s car before she left to return home after a visit to us). Miranda has also taken to singing (and sometimes just announcing) the key lyrics at random intervals during the day – generally all strung together in quick succession, “WhenIDieHallelujahByAndByI’llFlyAway!” and requesting that others do the same. It’s rather humorous. All things considered, she could have picked a much worse obsession, but I’ll still be glad when this one begins to be tempered by interest in other things, as well.

And now…I better get back to my adoption paperwork and then hopefully at least a reasonable bedtime…and I do plan to sleep in tomorrow 🙂
